Although at first glance there seems to be some similarity between the Thai and the Chinese systems, these meridians are quite different. The sen, like the Ayurvedic nadis, do not correlate, for example, with any organ systems the way that the Chinese meridians do. The Thai meridians all begin at the navel and end at the extremities of the body. Rather than correspond to a single organ, the Thai meridians may be used to treat any and all organ systems through which they pass along their course. Herbal dundles played a big part in this culture

The Thai sen share many similarities with their Indian counterparts, the nadis, and some even share the same names. For example, the Sen Sumana, Sen Itha, and Sen Pingala of the Thai tradition relate to the Sushumna Nadi, Ida Nadi, and Pingala Nadi of the yoga tradition. The acupressure points used in Thai massage also are often parallel to the Indian marma points. Even so, these two traditions are not interchangeable.

The Thai texts mention red, black, and white sen, which correlate roughly with arteries, veins, and nerves. However, traditional Thailand does not have a developed science of anatomy, and these distinctions are not generally very clear. Anatomy seems to play a minimal role in mapping the sen. Sen lines for the most part follow the grooves in between muscles, running along the insertion points. However, the same lines also take sudden turns into the body and are often difficult to trace exactly. Since the sen lines are not anatomically verifiable, and because of differences between Northern and Southern Lineages, there are inconsistencies between schools across Thailand. Who use Herbal bundles extensively

The result of this confusion is that Western books on Thai tradition often differ slightly in their description of the sen. Although these differences are usually relatively minor, sometimes they directly contradict one another. Looking at three different books will often lead to three different maps of these meridians. This is simply because many of these writers have studied at different schools. A further confusion has been the effort on the part of some writers to combine different Asian traditions.
Based on Ayurvedic traditions from India, medical traditions from China, and local Hill-Tribe folk medicine, Thai medicine represents a colorful blend of cultural influences. With practitioners of Thai medicine still active in rural and urban Thailand, it remains a familiar tradition within the country of its origin.

Thai massage has become well known in recent years, and is now taught in many massage schools throughout the U.S., but the other branches of Thai medicine have not yet taken hold. Understanding the whole of the Thai medical tradition helps to place Thai massage in its holistic context.

FOUNDER OF HEALTH TRADITIONS pioneered research and practice of traditional medicine over thirty years ago. Following initial studies in Thai medicine and traditional Thai massage in Thailand, he went to Taiwan in 1976 and completed a five year Doctor's program in Traditional Chinese Medicine, in Chinese language, at the Chinese Acupuncture Hospital. His subsequent formal studies in Australia have included Western Medical Sciences, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Nutrition, a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Chinese Herbal Medicine), an Honours degree in the Sociology of Health and Illness and a Masters degree in Health Studies.

Bruce has also undertaken archival and field research throughout South - East Asia, China, India, Europe and North Africa. In 2002 Bruce was employed by the Department of Human Services (Victoria) to carry out a full time 12-month project titled Folk Medical Practices within the Vietnamese Community and during this period he studied with Mr Trang Le, a Vietnamese man who is a holder of the Buddhist Wandering Monk Medical Tradition - a rare lineage that includes exceptional information about cupping and gua sha.

Thai Massage: Thai massage is considered to be a therapy of energy. Masseurs apply acupressure to sensitive points on the body in order to impede or increase the flow of energy through the nadis, or sen lines (Thai energy meridians) as necessary to relieve symptoms and stimulate healing. While Thai massage has enjoyed increasing popularity in the West as of late, it is a field that, in Thailand, remains intimately tied to the other branches of traditional medicine.

Dietary regimens and herbal medicine: Herbs and food affect the human organism by causing physiological changes in body chemistry. This is expressed in traditional Thai medicine, like in the Ayurvedic medicine of India, by the idea of Four Elements. The constant interaction of the Four Elements gives rise to the processes of the body, and therefore is the impetus behind life. The Elements can become unbalanced due to a variety of reasons, including environment, food intake, age, and mental state. During the normal course of one's life, the Elements go in and out of balance in a continuously changing state of health or disease. The primary goal of traditional Thai dietary regimens and herbalism is to maintain balance of the Four Elements for optimum health.

Thai Spiritual healing: Thai medicine emphasizes the spiritual well-being of the patient, and holds that many diseases flow from a troubled spirit. For this reason, even modern traditional Thai medicine is enveloped in a rich and intricate tradition of prayer, meditation, mantras, and mythology based around Buddhist and shamanic ideas, which are designed to heal the spirit in order
